This month saw a ransomware cyberattack that was startling in its scale, affecting hundreds of thousands of computers around the world in networks ranging from railways to hospitals, causing treatment delays for patients in the UK. While the WannaCry attack was entirely preventable, it can offer several lessons about prevention and resilience that bear repeating.
The price of complacency

This latest strain of ransomware takes advantage of a vulnerability in Windows that, according to Microsoft, uses software tools stolen from the National Security Agency (NSA).
While Microsoft released a patch for the vulnerability two months prior to this attack, its massive scale showed that many computers, especially in businesses and services like transit, hadn’t been updated or were using old or unprotected versions of Windows. This is unfortunately very common in the industry.
WannaCry is big, but it’s no “digital Pearl Harbor” as some pundits have claimed. It was somewhat unique in that it differs from typical malware that requires a user to click an attachment or link to infect a PC. Once this particular malware started, it automatically searched the internet and when it got a foothold in one machine, it could search an entire organization for vulnerable machines, infecting them even if they weren’t connected to the internet. Meanwhile, WannaCry also stays in a computer’s memory instead of its hard disk, making it undetectable to traditional antivirus software. Once inside a system, it encrypts files and demands a ransom of $300, payable in bitcoin.
That isn’t much, but it’s easy money for the criminals, who didn’t even bother to create something sophisticated. In fact, as reports have indicated, early versions of the malware had left a “kill switch” in the code that was used to slow the initial spread of WannaCry. A sophisticated attack could have done far more damage. What’s more, the malware could linger on your system even after payment, meaning your data could once more be held hostage, and in some cases, by the very same criminals.
How can you protect yourself and your organization from these kinds of ransomware attacks? Here are nine must-do steps to shore up your defenses:
1. Install the latest updates for your operating system, web browser and antivirus software by enabling automatic downloads. If you’re concerned this could disrupt your operations, schedule downloads during downtime or off-peak hours.
2. Check that your system doesn’t have any unnecessary connections (including ports and protocols) with other computers. Is your security technology able to see, with granular visibility, all traffic and connections on your network?
3. No users should be assigned administrative access unless absolutely needed. Likewise, all users should have their access privileges minimized to mitigate the spread of malware. The best security technology will, by design, be able to segment access.
4. Implement a functional data backup and recovery plan to maintain copies of sensitive or proprietary data in a separate and secure location.
5. Practice online hygiene: Scrutinize links in emails, do not open attachments in unsolicited emails, and only download software – especially free software – from sites you know and trust.
6. Develop, institute and practice employee education programs for identifying scams, malicious links and other forms of fraud. Update them regularly.
7. Have penetration tests run against your network at least once a year.

9. Share information with peers and the wider community, and support organizations, such as the Cyber Threat Alliance and appropriate Information Sharing and Analysis Centers (ISACs), that do so. Information-sharing strengthens our collective resilience against future attacks.
If you do get infected, report it to local law enforcement and provide them with the relevant log information. As for your computer, it’s best to reinstall the operating system and restore your data from a clean backup copy.
WannaCry may have been a learning experience for everyone, but these types of attacks are the new normal. Following the tips above will enhance everyone’s cyber hygiene and not just for ransomware attacks. If such steps were implemented, we could prevent, or at least reduce, a majority of threats. We should also avoid the blame game.
Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility among all stakeholders and we can’t be bickering with one another while the criminals laugh and take advantage of our confusion. WannaCry is only a small taste of what could happen in the future. It is yet another wake-up call to become smarter than criminals, increase our cyber resilience and design our systems and our teams to prevent attacks.

SEO As A Multi-Disciplinary Practice 2017

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, sounds pretty niche-specific, doesn’t it?  If you’re a business administration person, it might sound as specialized as it is obscure.  SEO is like “front-end user interface developer”: techy and incomprehensible at the same time.
If you’re a marketer, SEO might similarly be filed in the drawer marked “geek.”

How little do they know!  SEO is fundamentally an inter-disciplinary, technological, marketing practice.  If that statement doesn’t resonate with you, I’d encourage you to read on, and then make your own case in the comments below.
Let’s first start by laying to rest a notion that makes it impossible to understand the current state of SEO: SEO is not a specialty.  Yes, you heard that right.
Let’s think about this.  When most people use the term “SEO” they are discussing a desire.  That desire is to get more visibility for their website (and obviously, their product or service) with their primary customers or prospects. If you are immersed in SEO, you already know what the implication of this is.
On the other hand, if you are NOT immersed in SEO, let me lay out the basic overview of the true specialties needed for an SEO project to succeed in a competitive market:
Technical SEO – Before you can succeed with SEO, your website must be technically “friendly” to Google and Bing, allowing their crawlers (aka bots, spiders, spider bots) to access the site and making sure they are not confused or mislead by it.
Programming and Development – A modern website faces an ever higher technical bar to compete at its best in search results.  It must load fast, be responsive to mobile devices, operate in a secure environment and be designed to protect the security of its visitors in a horribly hacker-friendly world.  It might also need to conform to Google’s AMP standard.  All of these things are impossible to achieve without some web development chops.Related:GroupBuy SEO Tools
Modern Keyword Research – In SEO we normally think first of “keyword research,” but that’s only a small part of the research needed.  First, enlightened keyword research focuses on “searcher intent.”  John Alexander, the founder of the Search Engine Academy, coined the term “Keyword Forensics” to describe this type of behavior research.
Other research – But research goes beyond keywords and searcher behavior.  There is also the question of researching competitive landscapes and specific competitors, not to mention researching specific patterns that might make the way the search engines deal with this niche distinctive (for example, does Google tend to show videos for the searches in question? Local results?  Featured snippets?).
Content creation – SEO needs to concern itself with more than just churning out a bunch of meaningless content to “fill space” on the page.  The content needs to be written in such a way that it’s attractive to search engines (a function of SEO knowledge) and attractive to human beings (a function of good marketing copywriting).
Traditional design – People expect your page, your product, your brand to be visually pleasing, project a trustworthy image, and reflect a professional presence.  Creating the “look” that serves this purpose is the function of graphic design, yet it’s important for SEO.  Why?  Because one of the key metrics of SEO success is not simply getting seen in search results rankings, not merely getting people to click on your link, but also in your ability to persuade those people to take action on your website.
User interface design – Here’s another area that has an impact on “SEO” but which isn’t really “SEO,” namely the process of making an interface that will encourage a user to interact with the site.  Poor UI will lead to people hitting the back button and abandoning their website experience.  This disengagement will end up harming SEO in several ways.
Pay per click advertising – Technically this is not usually grouped with SEO, but I would make the case that it should be.  Google’s efforts at creating a need for paid search advertising have been quite successful, and most businesses are finding that paid search is necessary to reinforce traditional SEO.  Additionally, many of the optimization techniques used for traditional “organic” SEO are needed in leveraging PPC advertising.
Videography – YouTube is the world’s second busiest search engine.  Enough said.
And I’m sure there’s more – So, what have I overlooked?  I consider this a starting point and I’d love to see your take on it.
My conclusion is that those of us who have spent years in SEO consulting and training must increasingly view our discipline as much broader than we traditionally view it.  This raises increasing challenges, and makes the case for meeting by building a diverse team of practitioners that can support the increasingly heavy, increasingly unwieldy, umbrella that we call “Search Engine Optimization.”

How to Handle Unhappy Customers in Your Small Business?

Unhappy customers are part of running a small business. No matter how pleasant your personality or your service delivery someone will eventually criticize your product, staff, packaging, or even your response to their complaint. Part of you might want to tell the customer to take a hike. After all, you have other customers, right? However, that strategy will only lead to a damaged reputation, lost revenue, and you could invite a nasty online review about your business. Even though an unhappy customer creates an unpleasant situation, I recommend these strategies to turn resolve customer complaints.
Force Yourself to Listen
Nobody wakes up in the morning and thinks, “Today I hope I get screamed at by an irate customer.” However, it might happen, and you must be ready for it. The key is to be patience and endure it.
Unhappy customers need to vent. They feel they’ve been wronged, and if you interrupt them, you’ll only anger them further. Instead of shutting down the tirade, practice active listening. Take in everything they say and try to separate the words from the context.
Ask Questions
While you shouldn’t talk over an angry customer, you should wait for a break in his or her explanation to ask questions. Clarify any details that you don’t understand so you get the full picture. It’s also helpful to grab a pad and pen to take notes. Let the customer know that you want to get his or her complaint exactly right.
Asking questions can also help you find a resolution. You might say, “I understand that you’re unhappy with the quality of the product. Is there anything we can do to win back your trust?”
This puts the ball in your customer’s court. It’s okay if he or she doesn’t have a response, but the customer might take the weight off your shoulders by describing exactly what will rectify the problem.

Unhappy customers often exaggerate their emotions and use abusive language to get their point across. Even if the customer uses colorful language, don’t go there. Try to get clear on the source of their rage. Find out what exactly happened to cause this reaction?
After you’ve heard out your customer, try to forget about the abusive language, by putting yourself in their shoes. You’ll only make yourself angry by dwelling on it. Resolve the Problem
Here’s where you have to be the boss. If the customer makes a reasonable request, just say yes. Even if it’s hard, just say yes. People will forget what you say, but they will always remember how you made them feel. You can’t please everyone and sometimes, you have to give up. But that’s not my philosophy. I believe you should never let a customer down.
You can resolve any customer service issue with the right language and attitude. It is awesome when you can turn an angry customer into a loyal ambassador for your brand, follow some of the strategies I’ve used successfully in my business:
Express gratitude for the customer’s business. People love to feel appreciated.
Go above and beyond the customer’s expectations. Don’t just solve the problem. Give them more than they asked for, refund their money and offer FREE coupons for a return visit.
Never lose your smile. Staying pleasant is powerful. Pretend you’re talking to a thrilled client instead of a disappointed one.
Work quickly. Don’t make your customer wait for a resolution. Empower your employees to resolve issues up to $500.00, without calling a manager for approval.
If you make customer happiness your top priority, your customers will come back again and again. Sometimes the customer really isn’t right.
